Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

An important part of UL's mission statement is "to be a good example of corporate citizenship and social responsibility."

UL's vision for CSR is to achieve commercial success in ways that honor ethical values, respect people, communities, and the natural environment, and produce an overall positive impact on society.

The CSR pillars

  • Employees - We want our staff to feel respected, valued and trusted. We actively foster a culture where people do the right thing without regard to personal interest.
  • Environmental health and safety -- Our offices and laboratories provide a safe environment for our staff and customers, and meet or exceed all relevant environmental regulations. We follow practices that make the most efficient use of the world's natural resources.
  • Community involvement - We are engaged with and support the communities where we live and work, through both volunteerism and charitable giving. We've also adopted the theme of youth safety -- a universal aspiration -- as a 'signature program' for our community involvement efforts.
  • Suppliers and partners - We work with suppliers who are ethical and value the same principles that we do as a company.
  • Governance and ethics -We insist that as both individuals and a corporation we operate in an ethical manner at all times, complying with our standards of business conduct, and providing the necessary oversight to assure compliance.
  • Stakeholder engagement - We strive to understand the many constituencies with whom we interact, including customers, consumers, retailers, inspection authorities, government agencies and others, and do our best to meet their needs without compromising our integrity or our mission.
